Juno Beach is one of the quietest, most private communities on Florida's Atlantic coast. Many residents chose this small seaside town specifically for its peace -- the dog-friendly beach, mornings walking near the pier, the unhurried rhythms of a place where everyone knows their neighbors. When a pet who has shared that life reaches the end, the last thing any family needs is the stress of loading them into a car and sitting under fluorescent lights in a clinic waiting room. With a median age around 70, Juno Beach is home to many retirees and seasonal residents who have formed deep, years-long bonds with senior pets -- dogs and cats who have spent their entire lives within a few miles of this shoreline.
Dr. Katie Matzke is a Jupiter native who graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013. She focuses exclusively on end-of-life veterinary care and has been serving Palm Beach County families since 2023, bringing gentle, unhurried end-of-life care directly into the home. With over 110 five-star Google reviews, Dr. Matzke is trusted throughout the region for her compassion and clinical skill.
Think about a senior dog who spent years walking the beach path along A1A or riding in a golf cart through the neighborhood. Or a cat who has never left the house -- one who panics at the sight of a carrier and cries the entire car ride. These pets deserve to stay exactly where they feel safest. Dr. Matzke comes directly to your Juno Beach home so your pet never has to leave the place they know and love.
Juno Beach residents value quiet and privacy. That is a core part of why people live here rather than in a larger, busier community. In-home euthanasia honors that same value. The appointment happens entirely within your home -- no waiting room, no strangers, no time pressure. You control the environment, the pace, and who is present. It is as private as you need it to be.
Dr. Matzke follows a gentle two-injection process designed so your pet never experiences anxiety or pain. The first injection is given subcutaneously, just under the skin like a routine vaccine, and contains a combination of sedative and pain control medication. Over the next 5 to 10 minutes, your pet drifts into a deep, peaceful sleep and becomes completely unaware of their surroundings. Only after they are fully sedated does Dr. Matzke administer the second injection intravenously. Because your pet is already in a deep sleep, they feel nothing. The entire experience is calm and painless from start to finish.
Dr. Matzke arrives at your home and takes time to settle in. She greets your pet gently and handles all paperwork first so you can focus entirely on your companion. When everyone is ready, she administers the first injection subcutaneously with a combination of pain control and sedation medication. Over the next 5 to 10 minutes, your pet falls into a deep, peaceful sleep and becomes completely unaware. Once your pet is fully under, Dr. Matzke administers the second injection intravenously. The process is calm, painless, and quiet. Afterward, she takes a clay pawprint for your family. If your package includes cremation, Dr. Matzke handles respectful transport of your pet. The entire appointment takes 30 to 60 minutes and is never rushed.
Knowing when to say goodbye is one of the hardest decisions a pet owner faces. Some of the signs that your pet may be suffering include refusing food or water for 24 hours or more, inability to stand or walk without assistance, labored or difficult breathing, uncontrolled pain despite medication, loss of bladder or bowel control causing distress, and consistently more bad days than good days. No single sign is definitive on its own, but when several appear together, they often point toward a declining quality of life.
The HHHHHMM Quality of Life Scale, developed by Dr. Alice Villalobos, is a helpful framework that evaluates hurt, hunger, hydration, hygiene, happiness, mobility, and whether there are more good days than bad. Each category is scored on a scale of 1 to 10, and a total score below 35 generally suggests that quality of life has declined significantly. Dr. Matzke offers free quality of life consultations by phone to help you work through this assessment and decide what is right for your pet and your family. Call or text (561) 295-7979 any time.
