When snow, ice, or bitter cold make a trip to the clinic feel impossible, in home euthanasia lets your pet say goodbye where they are warm, calm, and surrounded by the people and places they know. Our veterinarian comes to you, so your pet never has to face the car, the cold, or an unfamiliar room.
At Rover Veterinary Care, a real person answers the phone seven days a week, and we will never rush you. When you are ready to talk, reach out to our team or call or text (775) 800-6463.
Why does an in-home goodbye feel easier during a Reno winter?
Because it removes the hardest parts of the day. There is no lifting a fragile pet into a cold car, no icy driveway or slick steps to manage, and no waiting room. Your pet can stay on their own bed, by the window, or near the fire, right up to the very end.
Reno winters can make even short trips difficult. Snow on the Mount Rose Highway, icy mornings in Sparks, and cold winds through Washoe Valley can turn a simple drive into something that feels overwhelming, especially for a senior pet who already struggles to stand or walk.
Older pets can feel the cold more deeply, and stiffness or weakness can make winter weather harder on them. Staying home keeps them comfortable and spares them stress during their final hours.
Home also means your family can gather without hurry. Children, partners, and other pets can be present if you wish. You can say goodbye in your own way, in your own time, in the place your pet loved most.
How do you know when it may be time?
There is rarely one clear moment. Most families notice a gradual change: a pet who no longer wants to eat, struggles to get up, sleeps more, or seems uncomfortable even when resting.
We got a call one winter from a family about their elderly dog. They said it had been a few weeks since they had started to see a real decline in his ability to get up and down the steps.
He was spending more and more time on his favorite blanket next to the fireplace. They wanted a peaceful in-home goodbye, right there, in the spot where he was most comfortable.
If you are seeing changes like these, it is okay to call before you have decided anything. Talking it through with us can help you understand what your pet may be feeling and what your options are. There is no pressure and no obligation, only a conversation.
Trust what you know about your pet. You see them every day, and your sense that something has changed matters.
How can you plan ahead when winter weather is unpredictable?
Reach out early, even if you are not ready to schedule. A simple conversation now can make the days ahead feel calmer, especially when storms can arrive with little warning.
When families call, we can often arrange a visit within 12 to 24 hours. Knowing that ahead of time can ease some of the worry about weather or timing. If a storm is coming, let us know, and we will talk through what makes sense for your family and your pet.
It can help to think about a few things in advance. Where would your pet be most comfortable? Who would you like to be there? Would you like a favorite blanket, toy, or treat nearby? There are no wrong answers.
We travel throughout Reno, Sparks, and Washoe Valley. On milder days, some families choose a quiet outdoor spot instead, and our doctors are also happy to meet you at a local Reno or Sparks park. Learn more about our pet euthanasia services.
What happens during an in-home visit?
The visit moves at your pace. When our veterinarian arrives, they will take time to meet your pet, answer your questions, and make sure you feel ready before anything begins.
We use a gentle two-step process that is painless at every stage. First, your pet receives medication that helps them relax deeply and drift into a peaceful sleep. Only once they are fully comfortable does the second step happen, and it is calm and quiet.
You can stay close the whole time, holding them, talking to them, or simply sitting nearby. Some families like to say a few words, play soft music, or share a favorite memory. Others prefer silence. Whatever feels right for you is right.
Afterward, there is no need to rush. You can take as much time as you need to say goodbye before our veterinarian gently prepares your pet for aftercare.
How are aftercare and cremation handled?
With the same gentleness as the visit itself. We take your pet into our care and handle every detail, so you do not have to worry about what comes next.
Families can choose from three cremation options. With communal cremation, pets are cremated together and ashes are not returned. They are scattered at sea through Oceans of Love.
With individual cremation, your pet is cremated separately by partition, and their ashes are returned to you in an urn or satin pouch. With private cremation, your pet is the only animal in the chamber, and only their ashes are returned.
Every family also receives a clay pawprint keepsake at no extra charge, a small way to hold on to the memory of your pet.
If you are not sure which option feels right, we will talk it through with you. Some families decide ahead of time, while others choose on the day.
